Nask Studio collaborated with Pace Gallery London on the exhibition “Mingei: Are You Here?” curated by Nicolas Trembley. This group exhibition, which took place from 15 October 2013 to 18 January 2014, explored the legacy of the Japanese Mingei folk craft movement, founded by philosopher Sōetsu Yanagi. Nask Studio’s role encompassed the creation of a comprehensive visual identity for the exhibition, including design collaterals and a memorable brochure, which was printed with the expert support of Push Print.
The exhibition brought together over eighty works by more than twenty-five artists, showcasing the enduring influence of Mingei, with pieces ranging from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles. Nask Studio worked closely with Federal Studio to provide photography that captured the essence of the exhibition, ensuring the visual language resonated with the themes of craftsmanship and cultural legacy central to Mingei philosophy.
Our contribution to this project was a blend of design and craftsmanship, creating a visual identity and physical materials that complemented the exhibition’s exploration of the ordinary, utilitarian objects created by anonymous artisans, as well as the connections between historical Japanese works and contemporary artistic practices.
